Heavy snowfall

Read from the internet that Kashmir is facing the heaviest snowfall in 15 years. Gulmarg has recorded 66 feet of snow against the usual 22-25 feet. I wish people in Gulmarg are not seriously affected.

This is a clip from the internet:
Life limping to normalcy in Srinagar, snow clearing
KT NEWS SERVICE
SRINAGAR, Feb 22: Life is slowly limping back to normalcy in most parts of the summer capital city. After five days, people came out of their homes and resumed normally activities albeit at a very dull pace.

Authorities cleared snow from the major roads in the summer capital city. Though the road was made traffic worthy, the snow accumulation on the fringes caused frequent jams.

Hundreds of vehicles were stuck in a traffic jam at different places. It took at least one hour to clear the road blocks and restore traffic from Shamshan Bhoomi crossing to Bemina crossing. In down town localities, hundreds of vehicles were stuck on the Nowhatta-Khanyar road as the snow accumulation was creating blocks and hampering with the smooth movement.

Reports from other parts of the city said that traffic jams was creating a lot of problems to the commuters. Several people from far-off places were stuck in the traffic jams by noon.

As the snowfall stopped, people today came-out of their houses and resumed their normal activities. Shopkeepers opened their shops and people joined their duties today. Banks and commercial establishments also resumed functioning today though the attendance was thin due to the traffic problems.

With Jammu-Srinagar national highway still closed, the police today set-up mobile counters at different places and distributed vegetables among the people. Special police trucks loaded with fresh vegetables were kept at Bagh Nund Singh Mandi at Chattabal where people were sold vegetables. Similar reports of selling vegetables came from civil lines and down town areas. District police authorities had given special instructions to station house officers to ensure smooth distribution of vegetables.

Milk supply was also partially restored as several carriers loaded with milk cans reached different parts of capital city. For the last few days the milk supply was affected due to the road blockades.
However, the people continued to face problems as kerosene and LPG was rarely available. People were seen waiting in large queues to fetch a LPG cylinder. Long queues of people were seen at Soura and Safa Kadal LPG depots. Cops were deployed in large number to discipline the crowd at the depots.

The shortage of eggs, mutton and poultry birds continue to persist in most parts of the valley. Mutton and chicken sellers have downed their shutters owing to non-availability of the sheep and chicken due to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

A battle without a deadline...

When I was in Gulmarg, I was given an old copy of Outside magazine where published a detailed report on the dispute between India and Pakistan over no-man zone over the glacier. I couldn't finish that as I was just too tired to read a long article.

Anyway, I have found the link of the great feature online. The full story can be found:
The Coldest War. Teru Kuwayama has done a great job of capturing the heaviness and the irony of the dispute with his camera.

Record breaking snow in Gulmarg
Houses cave-in, shadow cast on skiing championship
KT NEWS SERVICE
SRINAGAR, Feb 12: The massive snowfall at Gulmarg is likely to breaking all the past records as by this afternoon it had already crossed 9.5 feet making it the heaviest snowfall in last 25 years. The snow has cast shadow on the forthcoming international skiing event scheduled to start from next week.

"This is the heaviest snowfall in last 25 years and the problem is that it is still snowing. We have already 9.5 feet here and if it continues to snow at this pace, some more feet will accumulate", Farooq Ahmad Shah, chief executive officer, Gulmarg Development Authority told KTNS.

The authorities are trying hard to keep Gulmarg connected and the vital road link with Tangmarg has been continously cleared of snow. "We have no power here from some days but the road is still functional. The strip between Zig to Gulmarg is extremely treacherous but we are trying hard", he said. There are apprehensions of avalanches from the upper reaches where the snow has crossed 10 feet mark.

The massive snow has cast shadow over organising the three day international skiing championship scheduled to begin from February 19. "The championship is still on schedule and we have made all the preparations for it. But if it continues to snow, the event is unlikely", Shah said. Some 40 participants from 10 countries including Japan, Norway, New Zealand and Iran were scheduled to participate in the event.

Reports said a number of tourists have fled the tourist spot. Some three dozen foreigners and several domestic tourists are still there and they are enjoying the skiing. The authorities at Gulmarg said the situation is still under control but further snow will complicate the problems.

The snow, reports said, has posed the biggest threat to the tourist infrastructure at the hill resort. The first storeys of all the structures are covered by snow while the snow has reached almost the roof tops of the single storey structures. All the hotels and huts at Gulrmag, it is pertinent to mention, have been booked for five months from March onwards and there has been a continous flow of more bookings.

To make that happen, the men and machinery there has been geared up and people are clearing the roof tops to prevent the structures from collapsing. In the adjoing Dreng, people residing in single storey structures have dug tunnels and have to pass through them to remain in touch with each other.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Khursheed A Ganai, meanwhile, said the administration has been alerted in Gulmarg and other areas as houses there have started to cave in.

"We have sounded a red alert and administration has been fully geared-up. We have asked the officials to go to the people and ask them to remain vigilant against the caving-in of houses. We have also instructed the people to clear the snow from the roofs so that there is no caving in. Plus we have pressed our men into service to clear the snow and avert any untoward incident", said Ganai.

Believe it or not...

Having missed in blog for the last few days, I am now returning to civilisation... at least to have a hot shower at my hotel. Yes, I am in somewhere in Delhi where I haven't quite figured out yet. Believe it or not, I trekked down from Gulmarg to Tanmarg (sp?) this morning at 9:30am with a porter pulling a sleigh (sp?) with my luggage tied on it. Kris, I, two porters and our guide were trudging through the deep forest with snow came up to my thingh. Gulmarg have been having a heavy snowstorm since 6 days ago. Even the locals said the snowfall was very unusal and the closest one was 10 years ago. The road leading to Gulmarg is blocked by 3 feet snow and the snow bitter only arrives afternoon. Therefore, in order to catch my flight to Delhi departing at 13:10, I just had to choose to trek down. I cannot tell you how tired and exhausted I am right now. Not to mention the drama at Srinagar airport... I was completly wet and begging to have my seat (since I arrived very late... but then the flight was delayed too). I was sooooooooooo lucky to have the LAST seat to Delhi. Will share more details of my trip when I return to HK in 2 days time. In short, Gulmarg is for wild at heart and young in mind. It's more for adventurous skiing or snowboarding than the regular ski resort experiece we have in Japan, Korea, Canada or else where. Got to go now...

Butterflies in my stomach

Dates are counting down to my ski trip. Next Satuarday, hurray!

However, I feel there are butterflies in my stomach whenever I think about the trip. Reckless as I am, I hope I am not overlooking any safety precautions. So, I bought a used snowboard helmet yesteray from a person I knew through the snowboard community in HK.  Cannot believe my head exactly fits a XL. A headed nerd!

I haven't decided if I should buy my own equipment or I should rent from there. Anyone can advise me? I have been told that given the powdery and deep mountain condition, I should use a longer board, such as 148/9cm. Honestly, I've got no idea. Perhaps I should at least buy a pair of snowboard boots.

Am I crazy or what?

I am so tempted to buy my own snowboard gear. It's like the urge of owning your toy.

Lately, I am doing some research at home to find which board/ binding and boot suit me. Gosh, it's like doing a PhD thesis. So many different types.

So far my favourite pick:

Not sure if it makes any sense. If I only snowboard once/ twice a year, should I buy the whole set and let it collect dust for 11 months? Hmmm...

Alas... too sleepy... need to sleep now. Let me think about it again tomorrow.

Found a great news group in the Internet re travelling in India: www.indiamike.com

Haven't decided why to stay in Delhi. Hmm...

Just found out that there is a metro system in Delhi. Seems like the first section has been running since Dec. See if I can try it out this time.

One night in Delhi

Need to find a guest house in Delhi...

Originally I wanted to book Master Guest House but unfortunately the rooms are booked for that day. Only a small room left but I need two. Anyway, my colleague has given me few suggestions for me to check out. I still have time.
